The day before the Lenten Season inspires many different types of celebrations around the world and is called many different things. In the UK and Ireland, the day before Ash Wednesday is called Shrove Tuesday, derived from the word Shrive which means to confess. In Brazil, 70% of tourists flock to Rio de Janiero and other cities to celebrate Carnaval. Luxury Homes Team is taking a look at different ways Mardi Gras is celebrated across the World, and for those in Miami Beach, LHT recommends, the Alibi on Espanola Way, who is celebrating in the New Orleans style, with a crawfish boil, hurricane cocktails, and King Cake!
Belgium: In the city of Binche, Mardi Gras is the central holiday and they celebrate with Carnival of Binche. 1000 Gilles, or traditionally male participants in Carnaval, go out and dance through the streets starting at 4am until late at night, singing traditional songs.
Brazil: Depending on the city or region you are celebrating in in Brazil, Carnaval is undoubtedly the largest celebration in the country. However, all regions dance the samba and have massive parades featuring elaborate masks and costumes. The Bahia region of Brazil is particularly famous as well as Rio De Janiero.
Germany: The celebration in Germany is called Karneval Fastnacht, meaning Ever of the Beginning of the Fast. Parades are held in Cologne, Mainz, and Dusseldorf.
Italy: Italians celebrate Carneval and originated the theme of masqueraded balls, elegant costumes, and the prolonged celebration. The last days of Martedi Grasso, are the most celebrated and culminate on Fat Tuesday. The traditional foods are sugary and high in fat, perfect for a day before fasting.
Netherlands: The Netherlands celebrate a traditional Carneval as well, and it is held in the Southern part of the Netherlands, Noord-Brabant and Limburg.
Sweden: The Swedish people celebrate this holiday with a festival called Fettisdagen, which is literally translated as Fat Tuesday. They eat semlor only on Fat Tuesday and it is most grocers and bakeries will have this before the holiday.
